SINTEF

At SINTEF we conduct contract R&D as a partner for the private and public sectors, and we are one of the largest contract research institutions in Europe.

SINTEF is located in Trondheim in mid-Norway (1400 employees) and in Oslo (400 employees). We also have personnel in offices and subsidiary companies in Bergen, Tromsø, Ålesund, Raufoss, Mo i Rana, Porsgrunn, Brussels and Hirtshals (Denmark). SINTEF also operates a research station in Svalbard.

For more than 60 years, SINTEF has developed solutions and innovation for society and customers all over the world. E.g., in 2016, SINTEF carried out 5700 research projects for 4000 regional, national and international customers. A main focus is digitizing society and industry and a large portion of the activity is focused toward this topic. SINTEF leads the steering group for Digital21 – established by the Norwegian government to strengthen digitalization of Norwegian industry.

Moreover, SINTEF participates on a large number of European projects together with regional, national and European industry. Such European projects include, e.g., AFarCloud (ECSEL, 2017 – 2020) where SINTEF will develop a UAV solution with gripping capability for farming applications, INACHUS (SEC, 2014-2018) with digital decision support tools and robotics for search and rescue, R5-COP (ECSEL, 2014-2017) where SINTEF led a demonstrator for robotics for inspection and maintenance, and SWARMS (ECSEL, 2015-2018) where the goal was to expand the use of underwater and surface vehicles (AUVs, ROVs, USVs) to facilitate the conception, planning and execution of maritime and offshore operations and missions. Large scale national initiative within marine operations and systems (SFF AMOS), aquaculture (SFI EXPOSED) and manufacturing (SFI manufacturing) are all multi-year efforts which have a strong component of digitalization where SINTEF is involved. SINTEF is also strongly involved in digitalization of Norwegian companies within healthcare, process industry, fisheries and transportation. Some examples of projects includes:
